Third Brexit Customs Model Devised
After two previous proposals have divided opinion, a new plan for post-Brexit customs has been drawn up to present to ministers Friday, according to the BBC news website.
The plan is reported to be a ‘significant step forward’ and will offer ‘the best of both worlds’ as both an independent trade, and a friction-free trade, policy.
Details of how it will work have not yet been made public, but Friday’s Chequers summit will be followed by a White Paper, which will then be put to the EU.
The UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March 2019, although the future relationship between the UK and the EU remains far from finalised.
Terry Clear – Customs Insights Managing Director – commented “We have appeared to be heading towards an exit from the Customs Union, so it will be interesting to see how this will look. Its pretty difficult to imagine a plan that will cover both eventualities, while also being acceptable to the EU”.
