Northern Ireland Brexit Warning

by | Nov 7, 2018

The Northern Ireland Audit Office has recently stated the country is not well prepared for a no-deal Brexit in areas such as trade and customs.

With uncertainty surrounding the border and the repatriation of powers from Brussels, the Audit Office said planning is severely constrained.

Reserved powers for planning responsibilities falls to Westminster.

However, according to a review by the spending watchdog, these powers were never devolved to Northern Ireland’s government in Stormont, with influence in negotiations being undoubtedly limited.

In the areas where policy is reserved, NI is not well prepared for leaving the EU without a deal.

Nonetheless, the UK commented that the government is resolute in their commitments to Northern Ireland. And said this includes no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland and any physical infrastructure or related checks and controls.
